H ave You Made and Kept a Friend Online?
This is my new favorite question for potential hires and interns. Have you made and kept a friend online? Telepresent relationships are at the core of what marketing is all about and I can’t think of a better metric for media fluency.
57% of teens today have friends they’ve made online. 3 out of 10 of teens reported they had developed an entire network of friends online. Most of those surveyed said they made no effort to try and meet in person.
There was a time when we had to develop the ability to communicate via letters sent by mail. Letter writing was an important skill that was integral to maintaining relationships. Now we have email, Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram and whatever else might be coming next.
As marketers, we should know how to make and maintain friendships on any platform we are advertising on. Without those basic skills, how can we expect our audience to respond positively to the firehose of content we have lined up for them?
