radiant-orchid-swatch-cardDid 2013 feel a little… green, to you? There’s a reason for that. Since the year 2000, the Pantone Color Institute has examined annual trends to put a finger on the coming year’s zeitgeist. Last year, the color chosen was Emerald, or PMS 17-5671.

Next year, prepare to feel purple – and not just any purple, either. Radiant Orchid (also known as Pantone 18-3224) was chosen as 2014’s Pantone color of the year. In an interview with Pantone Color Institute Executive Director Leatrice Eiseman, it was revealed that the coming year’s color was chosen because, “It’s a color that speaks to creativity – so wearing it enhances your feeling of being more creative, more innovative.”

In design purple is a versatile color, triggering a vast array of moods all dependent on its pairing. Looking for a sense of mystery? Try mixing it with darker shades. Want to spice things up a little? Toss in several red tones and watch your design catch fire. If you ask us, it’s an exciting decision from Pantone. After all, what better way to kick off the new year than with a color choice inspired by – and inspiring – creativity?
